Description
Anarita Valley is only ten minutes' drive from Paphos International Airport, yet the planes fly into and away from the island across the sea, not the land. So you have the welcome bonus of a very short journey to your holiday home - kettle on and feet up in just a few minutes - without the sound of planes passing overhead.
Once refreshed, you can take your time to explore the three floors of the house (don't miss the roof terrace and its view across farmland to the sea) and then venture outside to find a private garden with a sunny patio.
Our house is part of a quiet residential complex of houses and apartments only recently completed close to the villages of Anarita and Timi, and has two beautiful large waterfall pools set in communal and very pretty landscaped grounds. There is also a small exercise room.
A five minute walk takes you to the traditional Cypriot village of Anarita, with its pretty church, and the basic amenities needed on holiday: tavernas and restaurants, a cafeteria and sports bar, and a small supermarket.
There are some small pebble beaches five minutes drive away at Timi and Mandria, with large sandy beaches with excellent facilities a little further away at Geroskipou.
Around ten kilometres to the west is Paphos, the ancient capital of Cyprus with many cultural and leisure attractions such as the stunning mosaics, the dramatic Tombs of the Kings and the fort, Blue Flag beach and picturesque harbour with many cafes, bars and restaurants.
Continuing to the west you will reach Coral Bay with its superb beaches lapped by the warm Mediterranean Sea to while away the lazy days, and then an excellent selection of places to eat, drink and be merry in the evenings.
The restaurants, bars and clubs in Coral Bay cater for all tastes - party animal to chilling out.
If you venture even further west, you will find the Akamas National Park with its abundance of nature including the famous turtle nesting beach at Lara Bay.
Cyprus has recently been welcomed into the European Union, and the currency is the Euro. English is spoken widely and well, and Cypriots drive on the left as we do in the UK.
To make the most of your visit to Cyprus, a car is essential and it is advisable to hire a car so that it is waiting for you at the airport.
Cyprus has a very warm climate, and water is precious especially in the hot summer months - be careful with it! The water in the taps is safe and pleasant to drink.
The sun is strong, particularly in July and August, and temperatures can reach a fierce 40 degrees Celsius - common sense required! - or perhaps head for the Troodos mountains in the centre of the island, as the Cypriots do.
Late spring and late summer are lovely with temperatures between 25 and 30 degrees, and even December and January are very pleasant indeed compared to what's happening in the UK . . . spring comes early in Cyprus and the island is covered in wild flowers in early February.
