Sesimbra Castle
Between the Sea and the Mountain
Situated on a hill over to the village of Sesimbra, the castle is surrounded by Arrábida mountain range, with exception for an opening at south, from where we can sight the sea and part of the village. The Castle of Sesimbra was taken by king Afonso Henriques, after the Conquest of Palmela. In 1190 before the news of the conquest of Alcácer do Sal by the Noors, and the fast advance of the arabs army, the Castle was destroyed. In 1200, king Sancho, I proceeds to its reconstruction and, in 1201, the king delivers the Castle to the Order of Santiago. In the beginning of century XIV, king Dinis order improvements in the Castle. However, in 1384, when Lisbon surrounded by the Castilians, the Castle was destroyed again, with the robery of valuable goods. In the XV century, the Castle will be gradually abandoned and around the year of 1516 the building is, already, in an advanced state of deterioration. The great hearthquake of 1755 contributed also for the ruin. However, in 1930/40, the interventions of the Estado Novo regime had the Castle of Sesimbra as an intervention point. The access to the Castle is made by a rip in the wall.
Arrábida Mountains
Close to Lisbon there are charming places that you will undoubtedly fall in love with. The Arrábida Mountains is definitively one of them! Located between Setúbal and the wonderful area of Sesimbra, the Arrábida boasts 35 km of limestone mountains and a wonderful coastline.
It was declared a Natural Park in 1976 to protect the many species existent here and some of the areas can only be visited with official authorisation. Walking through these mountains is an unforgettable experience - dazzling views of the coast and the contact with nature make this a place where you will want to return to again and again.
Its coast has some of the best beaches in the region, for example Portinho da Arrábida pictured on the right and the Galapos beaches where visitors can enjoy the delights of sunshine and a true blue sea and try an excellent selection of fresh fish and shellfish.
Golf
With the Arrabida mountains as its backdrop, the Quinta do Peru Golf Course offers amateurs a pleasant game, whilst also presenting a challenge for professionals. It was voted amongst the top 10 courses in Portugal in the biennial poll organised by the European Golf magazine. With its many trees and wild flowers, the course provides a varied start, for the first three holes consist of a par 5, a 386-metre par 4 and a 186-metre par 3. Amongst the first nine holes, attention is drawn to the short eighth hole, with a lake in front of its green.
The next nine holes are even more difficult. Number 12 is a par 4 which, although not very long, has a lake running beside the fairway and down to the green. Then comes what is probably the most difficult test on the course: hole 16, a 200-metre par 3, where one needs to play over a lake to reach the green.
The course´s recognised quality has led to its hosting several events from the European ChallengeTour.
The friendly family atmosphere makes this club one of the most highly regarded in Portuguese golf, its diversified course offering excellent views over the surrounding countryside.
